Klaviyo vs Shopify Web Pixels: which is faster?
Klaviyo is the most-installed marketing app on Shopify. It’s also, in our audits, the single biggest performance offender on the median Shopify store. Not because the product is bad, but because the default install method (an inline script tag in your theme) was designed in an era before Shopify Web Pixels existed.
This piece compares the two install paths, shows the real measured impact, and walks through the migration. If you’ve never touched your Klaviyo install since you set it up two years ago, you’re almost certainly running the slow version.
The two install methods
Method 1: Inline script tag (default, slow)
Klaviyo’s onboarding installs a script tag in your theme’s theme.liquid head. The script runs on every page load, on the main thread, before the page can become interactive. It tracks pageviews, identifies known customers, and powers onsite popups.
Method 2: Shopify Web Pixels (newer, fast)
Web Pixels are Shopify’s sandboxed JavaScript runtime, introduced in 2023. They run in a worker thread, off the main thread. Klaviyo published a Web Pixel integration in 2024 that does the same tracking with no main-thread cost.
What we measured
Across 47 Shopify stores audited through Store Auditor over the past three months, here are the average impacts of Klaviyo’s default inline install:

The store with the worst impact was running Klaviyo’s onsite SDK plus three Klaviyo popups, all loading inline. We measured 1.4 seconds of main thread blocking on the homepage. After migrating to Web Pixels, the same store measured 110ms.
Does the data collection change?
No. Both methods send the same events to Klaviyo: pageviews, identified users, cart additions, checkouts. The only difference is that Web Pixels run a few hundred milliseconds later in the page lifecycle. For analytics purposes, this is fine. For active onsite popups, you need to do a small amount of additional setup (see migration steps below).
There’s also no impact on email deliverability, segmentation, or any back-end Klaviyo feature. This is purely a script execution change.
How to migrate
The full migration takes about 30 minutes. Here’s the sequence.
1. Verify your Klaviyo Shopify app version
In Shopify admin, open the Klaviyo app and check the integration status page. If you installed before mid-2024, you’re likely on the legacy SDK. Klaviyo has a “Migrate to Web Pixels” button on newer installs. If you don’t see it, contact Klaviyo support and ask them to enable Web Pixels for your account.
2. Remove the inline script tag from your theme
In your theme code editor, find theme.liquid and remove the Klaviyo <script> tag that loads static-tracking.klaviyo.com or static.klaviyo.com/onsite/js/.... If you have multiple Klaviyo script tags (some merchants accumulate these over time), remove all of them.
3. Enable Web Pixels in Klaviyo
In the Klaviyo app within Shopify admin, navigate to Settings, then Onsite. Toggle “Web Pixels integration” on. Klaviyo will register the Web Pixel through Shopify’s API. You can verify it’s active under Settings, Customer Events in your Shopify admin.
4. Migrate onsite popups (if you use them)
Klaviyo’s onsite signup forms and popups are the one thing that needs special handling. They still render through Klaviyo’s script, which now loads via Web Pixels. The flow is identical for shoppers, but the load timing is slightly later. Test each active popup to confirm it still triggers correctly. Most don’t need any changes.
5. Re-audit
Run a Store Auditor scan before and after the migration. You should see Klaviyo’s blocking time drop from 400-700ms to under 100ms. If it doesn’t, you likely have a residual inline tag somewhere in your theme. Check section files, snippets, and any custom code blocks.
What this gets you in business terms
Faster pages convert better. We don’t promise specific conversion lifts (Shopify reviewers explicitly call out unsubstantiated claims), but here are the patterns we see consistently across the audits in Store Auditor.
- LCP dropping by 300-400ms typically correlates with measurable conversion gains on mobile.
- INP dropping below 200ms unlocks a Google Core Web Vitals pass for stores that were borderline.
- Reducing blocking time below 500ms on mobile generally makes the storefront feel “fast” to shoppers, which reduces bounce on the first page they hit.
If you’re running Klaviyo and you haven’t touched the install since 2023, this is the highest-impact 30-minute fix available to you.
What else to audit while you’re in there
Klaviyo is rarely the only offender. The same audit usually finds:
- Google Analytics 4 still installed via the legacy global site tag instead of Web Pixels.
- Meta Pixel installed via the legacy tag.
- Review apps (Judge.me, Yotpo, Loox) loading their full widget JavaScript above the fold.
- Chat apps (Tidio, Gorgias) loading on page-ready instead of user-intent.
Each of these is a similar story: a default install method that prioritized “works without merchant intervention” over “fast.” The fix in each case is similar to the Klaviyo migration. Move the integration to its faster sibling, or defer it to user interaction.
